- Some students work better with someone sat next to them, and some parents simply prefer it. In-person sessions are £35 an hour and take place at your home, with a parent or guardian in the house — James doesn't teach at his own address. Outside that area, or if the times don't work, online is the same teaching for £30.
For parents
- Enhanced DBS check, including the children’s barred list.
- The enhanced check is the level required to work with children in schools. James is happy to show the certificate before a first session — just ask.
- Classroom experience, not just subject knowledge.
- Two months as a paid teaching assistant in Plymouth schools, including a special school, working as whole-class support across every subject. Knowing a topic and being able to teach it to someone who is stuck are two different skills.
- You're welcome in the session.
- Parents are free to sit in on any session, and James will tell you honestly after the first one whether he thinks he's the right person to help — including if the answer is no.
- How in-person sessions work.
- They take place at your home, with a parent or guardian in the house — not at James's address, and he doesn't give students lifts anywhere. That's the arrangement whether you ask for it or not; it protects your child and it protects James. The enhanced check above is the level required for exactly this kind of work.

- A free 30-minute consultation.
A short call — with a parent, the student, or both — to work out where the gaps actually are and whether James is the right person to help. It's free, there's no obligation, and if tutoring isn't what you need he'll say so.
- Book your first session.
Sessions are 60-minute — online over video call, or in person at your home if you're in Bristol — usually at the same time each week so it becomes a routine. You'll get a calendar invite with the link. Payment is by bank transfer after each session — nothing upfront, no subscription, no minimum commitment.
- Start learning.
Each session is focused on what you actually need — worked examples, talking through a tricky concept, going over a past paper together.

£30 per 60-minute session, online.
£35 in person, in Bristol and within about 5 miles.
That's the whole price. The first consultation is free, there's no registration fee, no agency cut, and no minimum number of sessions — you can stop whenever you like. Payment is by bank transfer after each session. The extra £5 for an in-person session covers James's travel — there is no separate mileage charge.
6 sessions for £165 — £27.50 an hour.
If you already know you want a run of sessions — a term of weekly work, or a push before a specific paper — you can pay for 6 upfront and save £15 against the £180 they'd cost one at a time. Unused sessions are refunded if you stop. Most people don't start here, and nobody has to: pay-as-you-go is the normal way to work with James and always will be.
James is a full-time engineering student, so the number of weekly slots is genuinely limited — most are late afternoon and evening. Get in touch to find out what's currently free.

A few questions people ask
- Why one-to-one rather than group sessions?
- Group sessions move at a compromise pace. One-to-one means the session is built around the specific things you're finding hard — not a curriculum chapter.
- You're a student yourself — why not a qualified teacher?
- A fair question, and the honest answer is that it's a trade. A teacher has more classroom years than James does. What James has is the same material still fresh — he sat these exams recently and is doing the degree these subjects lead to — plus Enhanced DBS check, including the children’s barred list, two months of paid classroom experience, and a rate well below what a qualified teacher charges. The free consultation exists so you can judge for yourself before paying anything.
- Is my child safe? What checks have you had?
- James holds an Enhanced DBS check, including the children’s barred list — the level legally required to work with children in schools — and worked in Plymouth schools through a supply agency. He'll show you the certificate on request, and parents are welcome to sit in on any session.
- Does online really work for Maths and Physics?
- Yes, provided there's a shared whiteboard — which there is. You write, James writes, and you both see the same working in real time. The thing that matters in a Maths session is watching someone's working as it happens, and a screen does that as well as a table does.
- Which exam boards do you cover?
- AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC for Maths, Physics and Computer Science. Tell James which board you're on when you get in touch and he'll work from that specification and its past papers.
- How many sessions will we need?
- It depends entirely on the gap. Some students want a few sessions before a specific paper; others work weekly across a year. Nobody is asked to commit — you book what you need and stop when you're done. There's a 6-session block available at a slightly lower rate if you already know you want a run of them, but it's optional and most people don't use it.
- What if it isn't working?
- Tell James and stop — there's no notice period and nothing to cancel. If he doesn't think he's the right person to help, he'll say so himself rather than keep taking the money.
